Ooooh look! A Flash Element TD 2 update!

Howdy all.
Work on Flash Element TD 2 (FETD2) has been going at a pace on the run-up to the Collectives go-live” date at the end of this month *bites nails* and I have taken some time out to do a quick update and post some screen-shots.

Flash Element TD 2

There is a total of 9 towers which include the classic Arrow and Cannon, there is no Air tower as there are no flying creeps, instead there is a Slow tower which slows creeps in an area and a Bash tower which can stun a single target. There is now a Sniper tower which has a huge range and damage (but a slow fire rate). There is a new Fire tower which sets the creeps on fire so they take damage over time (D.O.T) as well as Splinter and Gunner towers which can hit multiple targets at the same time. Finally we have the Wave tower which is a good all-rounder. All towers can be upgraded to level 10 and sold at any point.

The Creep TV is one of the first things you will notice when you are playing, you can click on any creep to see its HP and Speed as well as a live video of its progress. The same TV is used for towers which lets you upgrade and sell as well as seeing what Range Damage and Damage per Second (DPS) it has. I have also added shortcut keys for Selling and Upgrading as well as Building, Pausing, Fast Forwarding and Sending the next wave.

Another cool feature I have just added is the ability to select multiple towers at the same time. With groups of towers selected you can bulk upgrade or sell. When building you can also hold down Shift to place copies of the same tower over and over.

The sheep’s and small children have gone and instead there are 7 new creep types. Normal, Fast, Group, Shifting, Armoured, Immune and healing. All of which have their own unique challenge and should make for a fun game.

So that’s where I am at now, I am currently working on integrating it with Paul’s Single player widget (which allows the saving and loading of stats and score submission, very cool!) and adding Music and SFX. After that there is the painstaking process of balancing, joy! :o)

When the Collective goes live this will be a 100% free to play game, you won’t even need an account to play! weeeeeeee :o) And if you can’t wait till then to join up then you can always use the BLOG invite key to create an account today!

That should be ‘sneaky’ not ‘sneeky’ in the last picture…

Otherwise, good work. Looking forward to it…

  6. john says:

Sweet looks like everything is coming along very nicely. Take your time, no rush :) and @ balancing I know some peeps who’d like nothing more than to alpha test for ya… :)

  7. Fredward says:

looks like a good amount of DTD creeps and towers invade FETD…

  8. Zack says:

Why is it “Flash Element TD 2” If there is only one element — Fire?

  9. Dave says:

@ Zack: Well in this version you are defending your elements (the yellow dots) But there is wood, water and fire. But at the end of the day it is just a name :)

@ Fredward: Well the group creeps were in DTD first, but the rest were in Element TD 1 (which was made before DTD) or are new (Invis + Healing). The towers are also quite different, The only one which was in DTD but was not in FETD1 is the sniper tower. So with 1 creep type and 1 tower type in common I do not agree with your comment.

Looks great! I can’t wait. It’s good to have the single player games for when you don’t know if you might get called away. I can’t wait!

  11. Tyler says:

Sweet – what a great game!

  12. John Willemse says:

Maybe instead of having to press the Shift key to place multiple towers, you could make it so that once a tower is selected you can build it multiple times by default, like DTD. Looking great BTW! I can’t wait to play this!

Guys, Isn’t it cool that today, with superadvanced, 3D worlds in High-packed action games and immensive online realities – People still line up, eager, for simple, intelligent, ‘low-tech’ games that would (theoretically) Run on our old C64’s …?

    … Just a thought.

  17. Dave says:

Game play, ease of use and originality will ALWAYS beat fancy graphics in the long run :o) There is no better time to be a “indie game programmer” than right now.

The problem is that in about 5 years time even the web stuff will be fancy 3D graphics (google “papervision 3D”) and then we will probably get a surge in nice simple games on the mobile platform until that suffers the same fait. Hopefully people will still cry for game play and simplicity over visuals.

    Just from a quick read:
Bash is completely new to FETD2 and borrows at least the name from DTD.
Shifting can be compared to Morphs, a creep that changes its properties.
    Sniper is obvious…
Groups are as you said, from DTD.
I don’t recall armored creeps (Dark Creeps) in FETD1.

I’m not saying it’s a bad thing as the play experience in both games is different enough that they don’t overlap, so making certain elements more similar, such as creeps and/or towers being similar in both games doesn’t detract from either.

Can you give me a invite at the Casual Collective please.

  21. […] Im Blog der Entwickler von Flash Element TD 2.0 ist heute ein neuer Beitrag aufgetaucht, der ein wenig zum Spiel erzählt und Bilder zeigt. […]

Looks pretty damn awesome. Good work!

As to what dave said above,
“Hopefully people will still cry for game play and simplicity over visuals”

I am a game designer and I, personally, don’t think you will have to worry about that. The game industry has been taken over by franchise games that have millions of fans due solely to the visual aspect. But lately (past couple of years), some games have slipped through the cracks with their simplistic design and play style. (grid wars, DTD, psychonauts, etc) Casual games are the number one gaming genre, as I am sure you know since you created the most popular casual game ever.

Congratulations on all of the success and I look forward to FETD2

  24. Kars-T says:

    Hi there!
I just wanted to wish you good luck for the new game and i am counting the hours to the release ;)

Towerdefensehq is our fanproject to these kind of games and i will closely follow your news translate them into german and write some comments.

Right now i think the graphics are … -_- well not what i would have expected. This looks more like DTD. DTD runs greate and is a fantasic game of the TD genre. So I still think with all your experience this will be a great game.

    Keep it up!

  25. Dave says:

@Patrick: Thanks, Element TD 1 has had 63,999,506 since it went live 328 days ago, only 37 days till it is 1 year old and at the current rate it should be at just over 70 million views by then, just :) I don’t have stats for other casual games, but it has to be one of the more popular this year?

@Kars-T: Thanks, the graphics are a work in progress but will not change too much. I have just made it chat to our server so there will be awards for total creeps killed, total gold earned, highest level reached etc.

@Bruce: There is an invite link at the bottom of the post. Click on that to join.

We also have just passed 20,000 registered members on the Collective, weeeeee :)

Though name and password are correct (checked them both, changed password twice), all I get is the message that pw and sign-up name don’t match.

Can somebody help me with that?

  31. Unknowner says:

Can you add a site/link/form were people can send a mail to CC if they can not login like myself. Since the last update i can not login with any browser or os.
